Novolac is a linear polymer of [Ph-Oh + HCHO]. So ester linkage not present. So novolac is not a polyester.
Polymers
Polythene is an example of thermoplastic polymer.
Melamine polymer, Bakelite and Urea-formaldehyde resin are thermosetting polymers.
Thermoplastic polymers are the linear or slightly long chain molecules capable of repeatedly softening and hardening on cooling.
Thermosetting polymers are cross-linked or heavily branched molecules, which on heating undergo extensive cross-linking in moulds and again become infusible.
These cannot be reused.
Elastomers have polymer chains held together by weak intermolecular forces.
Fibres possess high tensile strength.
Dacron, Nylon-66 and Novolac are prepared by condensation polymerisation.
Teflon is an addition polymer.
Monomer of teflon is tetrafluoroethene.
Reagent R is C 2 H 5 OH with diazonium salt.
Naturally occurring polymer, natural rubber is cis-1, 4-polyisoprene.
Biodegradable polymer is Nylon-2-Nylon-6.
Cross-linked or network polymers are usually formed from bi-functional & tri-functional monomers and contains strong covalent bond between various linear polymer chains like Melamine, Bakelite etc.
Natural rubber is cis-polyisoprene.
Nylon is a polyamide.
